More about K2 and SharePoint 2013

In my last post, I mentioned that K2 support for SharePoint 2013 in SharePoint 2010 mode is now available with the K2 blackpearl 4.6.5 update, but that's just part of our SharePoint 2013 story, so I thought I'd provide some more details about what we're working on.

First, I have a question. Has your company already upgraded to SharePoint 2013? Or, are you waiting to take the 2013 plunge? If you're waiting it out a bit, you're definitely not alone. What we're hearing in the marketplace - from analysts, to bloggers, to our own customers - is that, while most companies are planning on upgrading, they're taking their time and coming up with a solid paln to ensure successful migration. In a survey of K2 customers, almost 75% of respondents told us they weren't planning on upgrading for at least six months and, in some cases, not for a year or two. Based on that information, we felt like it made the most sense to deliver our new SharePoint 2013 capabilities in two phases.

Phase 1
For existing K2 customers who are migrating to SharePoint 2013, you can now (starting with K2 blackpearl 4.6.5) run your existing K2 applications on a SharePoint 2013 site running in SharePoint 2010 mode. With a few exceptions, your applications will run exactly as they did in SharePoint 2010. More details can be found in the release notes for K2 blackpearl 4.6.5.

Phase 2
A new set of K2 integration components will make use of the new SharePoint App framework, resulting in a minimal SharePoint server footprint and availability through the SharePoint App Store. K2 Business Applications for SharePoint 2013 provides a new way of integrating your K2 applications with SharePoint, and includes the following capabilities:

  • Auto-generated K2 SmartObjects and SmartForms for SharePoint lists and libraries
  • Workflows based on SmartObject events, SmartForms events or SharePoint events
  • More than 140 SharePoint-based event wizards built using the new SmartWizard framework

K2 Business Applications for SharePoint 2013 will be out a little later this year, but our Beta program registration is currently open for all existing K2 customers and partners.
